Happy Memorial Day!

Happy Memorial Day to all of you! I'm so thankful today for all those who have given their lives to protect our freedoms, and for those who are serving in our armed forces right now.

We have been spending our day here at home, mostly, working on planting our garden! I'm excited about it and hoping it does better this year than last. Jim is making a framework around and over it, to put plastic on, to hopefully achieve a "greenhouse" effect. Which should hopefully make a difference in how well everything grows!

I had to make a quick trip to Walmart to buy more compost to beef up our garden soil. We had noticed here at home that there was a smoky smell in the air and that it was rather hazy. From Walmart, I could see that the whole valley was hazy and smoky; some of the mountains could hardly be seen. I overheard some people saying that the smoke was all the way from Canada, and found out later that there are some huge forest fires burning in Quebec. It's amazing to me how the smoke from something so far away could blow all the way down here!

I wanted to show you some more beauty from around our house. (Hmmm, well, Blogger is being finicky right now, so a photo will have to come later.) A few weeks ago, Jim noticed that some robins were building a nest on one of the posts under our deck. It's really cool because we can look through a crack between the deck boards and get a "bird's eye view" of the nest! :) On Thursday, there was one egg in it. On Friday, there were two. On Saturday, there were three. It looks like mama is done laying eggs, now . . . but she's gonna have to start spending some time sitting on them if she wants them to hatch! I am hoping that she does, because it would be so cool for the kids to get to peek at the babies every now and then and see the whole eggs-to-baby-birds process from start to finish. We shall see, though. The mama bird might just be a little too skittish with all the commotion from our lively bunch!

I have declared this week to be "sewing week," and I have about a million projects I want to get done. Well, not really a million. :) But here's my list (there are even more, but this is what I want to work on for starters):
  • 3 aprons (graduation presents)
  • 2 skirts for Julia
  • 2 pairs of capris (one for Julia, one for her cousin Ruth)
So far I've only gotten one apron cut out, but hey, that's a start, right? And getting the garden planted was kind of important, too. ;) Well, I need to get going, but just wanted to give you guys a quick update on us! Hope you're all having a lovely holiday!

One year a Robin built her nest in the climber of our swingset. It was so cool. We took photos of the nest, eggs, babies, momma feeding them and finally leaving the next. We put these together in a homemade book. The boys still say "Mom do you remember that year..............."

This year we have Phoebe's but they aren't as photogetic. :)

I hope the bird's nest viewing goes well! I love to watch birds nest & hatch. My parents had a cardinal's nest we watched this spring.
Good luck on your sewing projects! I should join you & make the curtains I've been putting off...
