The finished room!!

I'm happy to report that the kids' room is DONE! It only took us about 3 weeks longer than planned, LOL . . . isn't that the way it goes? :) Anyway, it is now the most finished room in the whole house and it looks awesome. Just the way I hoped it would look! Jim and I make a good team. We both had a sort of vague idea of how we wanted the room to look, and thanks to his superb carpentry skills, it turned out just right. There are still some more things we want to do--I need to make a Roman shade for the window (to keep out more light in the mornings) and we want to print out and frame some more pictures of the kids to display here and there. Also, we are getting another mattress for the bunk bed (it's ordered and should be in at Sears next week) and we plan to move Sam to the top and Julia to the bottom sometime this spring, probably. No big hurry in moving Julia, since the baby will be in the pack 'n play for a while before moving to the crib. Anyway, without further ado, here are the pictures!

A few neat things:

~The crib bedding (which we got before Sam was born--on sale at Walmart, and we figured it would work for either a boy or girl) is Raggedy Ann & Andy, all primary colors. You can't see it too well in the photo, but the picture above the crib is a drawing of Raggedy Ann & Andy in a rocking chair, that I made in an art class in high school--funny how that worked out!

~I decided several years ago that I wanted to make Sam's future room with a cowboy theme. I suppose I should have done trains instead, but hey--cowboys and trains work pretty well together. :) He received the cowboy comforter as a Christmas gift a couple years ago, as well as various other coordinating decor. And long before we even had him, we had snapped up a bunch of western themed photo frames at Kohl's, which were on a ridiculously good sale. So far I've only gotten a picture into one of them (you can see it on his dresser), but I plan to use more of them, to display on walls and bookshelves. I fell in love with the Lil' Cowpokes fabric years ago, when I first saw it in a Keepsake Quilting catalog, and always wanted to use it for something, someday! I was able to get 3 yards of it on Ebay for a decent price, and I love how the curtains turned out! I plan to use the rest to make throw pillows or something else to coordinate. And isn't it cool that the cowboy stuff is all primary colors and coordinates beautifully with the crib set?! Now I don't think that everything in the room has to match. :) Julia has a lot of girly stuff and some beautiful handmade quilts and blankets in pinks, greens, purples, etc., which are the colors I hope to implement in her future room. But for while she's in the same room with Sam, we bought her a beautiful red and cream toile bedding set off Ebay. I can't wait to get it out when we get the new mattress!

~The train poster on the wall is SO cool. It shows all sorts of railroads across the country, several of which are ones we've visited in NH and PA! Some friends of ours found it in a closet when they moved into their new home, and generously donated it to Sam, knowing how much he would love it (and he does!). We bought a poster frame at Walmart, and it looks so nice on the wall--a perfect addition to the room.

~I love the curtain tie-backs. I found these on sale at Walmart several years ago, and knew they would be perfect for whenever we got the room done. And they look just right with the cowpoke curtains! The tab tops on the curtains are blue bandanna material which my mom had on hand, and the shade I'm going to make will be of red bandanna-style material printed with guitars and cowboy boots, also from my mom.

It is so neat how all these things came together to make this room just how we wanted it! I hope I haven't bored you all by going on and on, but I am just so excited to have a fun and inviting room for our little people. :) Already, they are having so much more fun playing in there than ever before--and no wonder! It's quite a change from drab gray sheetrock! All the credit goes to my sweet hubby, who put in many hours of hard work. I know he is thankful to have it finished, and I think it has motivated us to work harder on finishing the rest of the house, as we have time and money. Hope you enjoyed the little photo tour--it's hard to get good shots of the room because of the way it's laid out, and because it's small, but hopefully this gives you a pretty good idea of the overall look. :)
