A day at Muster Field Farm

On Saturday, we headed to Muster Field Farm in N. Sutton, NH for the annual Farm Days event. We had gone a couple years ago, when Sam was about 18 months (I blogged about it here, if anyone feels like looking back :)), and had such a fun time. We had a great time this year, too, aside from the weather being SO HOT.

Muster Field Farm is a historic homestead that is also a working farm, complete with cows and huge beautiful gardens, and a farm stand where you can buy veggies. On the Farm Days weekend, they have lots of tractors and antique cars and trucks on display, and they also have a lot of craftsmen and women set up in different areas, demonstrating how to do various old-fashioned crafting such as carving, spinning and weaving, candle-making, board planing, stone splitting, etc. Lots of neat stuff to see!

Jim enjoyed trying out a pair of stilts. He did really well on them!

Julia had fun walking around, some of the time.

The tractors were Sam's favorite!
Sam also had fun looking into the tree-home of the "Musterfield Elf." There was this elderly lady there with paintings she had made of the imaginary elf. She really wanted Sam to check out this little door in the tree.
Another funny thing was that she told Jim he must have known an elf when he was little. Well, I do tell him he has "elf ears" (slightly pointed); maybe she thought so, too. :)
A pretty display of pumpkins and cornstalks
We came home and crashed in mid-afternoon, and were pretty lazy the rest of the day. The one industrious thing I did was doughnut making. (Rachel, I used your dad's recipe, and they were YUMMY!!) I have not made doughnuts for at least 6-7 years (which is probably a good thing for our waistlines :)), but they are not that hard. Only, I made such a mess with the oil. My counter was well-oiled by the time I was done, LOL. It always makes me nervous to work with hot oil, too. Someday I would like a friolator (sp?) or something like that. I like to use my electric skillet just because the temp. stays consistent that way, but it is not as deep as I would like and makes the oil more likely to spatter out. Anyway, the doughnuts were a hit at our house . . . here's a picture to make you all hungry. :)

Those donuts look yummy:). I was talking with my dad tonight about Christmas plans and he mentioned making donuts for everyone. I am ALL for that idea! I'll have to tell him that you guys liked them.
The Farm you all went to looks like so much fun. What a great way to spend family time together. I need to do some research to find places like that down here. Little by little we are finding things that we like to do. BTW - I misspoke on my post about using V8 Splash, I use V8 Fusion. The Splash has hfcs in it and I realized that I wrote it down incorrectly - sorry.
Also, my friend April has written down some recipes for kefir soda on her blog. Her blog is invitation only but if you are interested in the recipes, I can copy them for you. Let me know what you think. Have a great week!

Looks like a fun day! Maybe we will have to visit Muster Field Farm during the Farm Days next year!

And those doughnuts look wonderful...

Where do you find all these neat activities?!? I'm so jealous! I guess that comes with living in one area for lots of consecutive years, eh?

Great job on the donuts. You succeeded in making me hungry - but that isn't a hard task these days. :)

Rachel, I will definitely be making those donuts again! We loved them!! Next time I will have to hide them from myself, though, and only have a tiny taste. :)

Thanks for the clarification on the V8 Splash/Fusion . . . isn't it annoying how that HFCS is in SO much "good" stuff nowadays?! If you get a chance to copy the kefir soda recipes, that would be great, but no hurry. I'm not sure how well we would like them--it would probably depend how much the actual kefir flavor was masked. :) That's what I love about the smoothies--it really covers the kefir flavor. And yes, BTW, I just make my regular smoothie recipe but substitute kefir for all the milk.

Mrs. T, you guys should definitely go next year! I think you would enjoy it a lot.

Alicia, we mostly hear about this stuff from friends or relatives. Or sometimes read about it in the paper, etc. It does seem that there are a lot of great family activities in our area, though! Wish I could send some donuts your way . . . but alas, they are all gone now! :)
