Question of the Week: Cleaning and Organizing

Those of you who know me well know that Miss Organization is not my middle name. :) The art of managing my home, time, and "stuff" is something I'm continually learning about . . . and some days, I wonder if I've learned anything at all! But I'm trying to take small steps and accomplish little victories in my life-long quest to become a good manager. I learned from Flylady that some of us are "born organized" and others of us are "SHEs" (sidetracked home executives). :) That phrase describes me to a T!! I'll walk into a room with the plan to do one thing, then I'll see something else that needs doing, so I'll start tackling that, only to remember another chore . . . so sometimes I go around in circles all day and not much really gets accomplished. Other days, I focus much better and get a lot done.

One thing I plan to do to help me focus better, is use a timer more. If I set a timer for 15 minutes and make sure to work on only one task for that amount of time, I think I'll get more done. I also hope to utilize my Control Journal to help me schedule my days (not too strictly, because I like more flexibility, but just to help me remember to do certain things each day.

Well, I've been rambling more than I meant to here, but my question for you is this: What works well for you as far as organizing your home/time/etc.? Do you schedule your days? Do you clean your house on a schedule (i.e. certain chores/rooms on certain days)? And out of curiosity, do you feel that you are a born organized person (lucky you!) or a SHE? :) I would love to hear your helpful tips!!

I would say I am more of a born organizer. I like schedules and keep them, I try to have a place for everything and get rid of anything I haven' used and know I won't need. I do try to keep a schedule to my chores. Monday i do laundry, and grocery shopping. Tuesday - ironing. Wednesday - bathrooms and glass surfaces and vacuuming. Other things get done as needed (I think dusting is my least favorite job). Thursday is library day and the weekend the house gets messy. it works for us though. When I had a job and no kids I did most the cleaning Saturday morning and it was less than a 2 hr job.

Carrie, thanks for sharing what works for you! It was fun to read your weekly schedule. And I have to say dusting is one of my least favorite jobs, too . . . as you could tell if you came to my house, LOL! I do try to keep up with it, because I hate it when things look dusty, but it's one of those things that I often forget to do, until I notice a layer of dust or little webbies on everything.

I am definitely a SHE. I get sidetracked sooooo easily. I have prayed for years to be able to get my housework on a schedule and keep it there. The past few years I have been praying specifically that the Lord will help me to grow in the area of time management.

Are things perfect? No; my home/time management skills are a work in progress. But the important thing is that I do see progress!

I follow the FlyLady zones. It makes more sense and works better for me than anything I've ever tried before. I make a weekly schedule -- not just for household tasks but for everything my week will hold. I have made up my own weekly calendar forms for this that work really well. I plan the upcoming week on Sat. evenings. I also make a daily schedule. This has helped me immensely, to take 5 minutes each morning to think through my day and decide what would be the best time slot for each thing I have to do. Elizabeth George contrasts it as the difference between just stuffing flowers in a vase and arranging them for the best effect. It really does help!

Just a few thoughts... hope they are helpful!

One more thought. I also try to follow a morning, early afternoon, and evening routine. My evening routine includes leaving a clean kitchen and getting my clothes ready for the next day. My morning routine includes putting away the clean dishes from the sink drainer and also spiffing up the bathrooms. These are all ideas inspired by FlyLady, and they really do help a lot. I still haven't mastered doing the weekly home blessing on Mondays, but it's such a great idea to put things back together from the weekend.

Mom, thanks for sharing what works for you! Sorry I am so late replying. I am slowly trying to get back into Flylady and I can see it making a difference. I've been getting all my dishes done at night, about 80% of the time, keeping my shoes on, and just started working on the daily swish & swipe in the bathroom. Baby steps!! The morning, afternoon and evening schedule is a great idea and I think I will try to implement those in little bits, as well.

Thanks for the input! :)
