Baking day

I made bread today, and Sam got to make his own little loaf. Isn't it so cute? I got the idea to let him try that from my friend Elisha. He really had fun patting his own little piece of dough into shape. :) And later on he ate about 2/3 of his loaf in one sitting!

ETA: I wanted to post this link to my wheat bread recipe, for Tracy and anyone else who may be interested. It uses half whole-wheat and half all-purpose flour. I'm also planning to try a 100% whole wheat recipe that a friend sent me, and maybe also the recipe off the back of the King Arthur whole-wheat flour bag. I'll let you know how it goes.

Sam's loaf is adorable! What a great idea Elisha had!

Carrie, Do you only make bread once a week? How many loaves do you make? I've been making it in my bread maker lately, but I've been wondering if it would be better for me to make in the oven. How do you keep it from going stale during the week? Sorry to flood you w/ questions. Must be b/c you were one of my favorite roommates out of all my years of college.
Thanks,
Tracy

Awww, Tracy, you're so sweet. :) I have great memories from when we were roommates, as well.

I usually only make bread once a week--I guess we don't go through as much of it as some families. But there are only 3 of us eating it right now, too. I make two loaves at a time. I use my Kitchen Aid mixer for kneading the dough, so it's super easy. I just edited the post to include a link to my recipe--I kept meaning to do that for you, and your comment reminded me. I'll also try to post my pizza dough recipe in a little while. I haven't had a problem with the bread going stale. I usually keep one of the loaves in the freezer, or sometimes in the fridge. Of course the freezer is the best choice, esp. if you make several loaves at a time, and if you have enough room in the freezer! But it seems to keep well in the fridge, too.

I used to make bread in my bread machine all the time when we were first married, but then we switched to buying store bread for a few years, and I just got back into making it by hand over the past 6 months or so. We like it so much better than even the "good" store bread. I like this recipe because I can make two loaves at a time, whereas you can only make one in the machine. Also, the crust on this comes out softer than the machine bread I used to make. I do still love my bread machine for making pizza dough, though . . . and dough for rolls, sweet rolls, and occasionally specialty flavors of bread.

Hope this helps! Have a great weekend!

Thanks for the whole-wheat recipe! I have a few wheat bread recipes that I love. None that are bread-machine ones though. One's an artisan type no-knead wheat bread and the other's a parmesan pull-apart wheat bread. Let me know how your wheat baking experiments go!

Alicia, I'll definitely post about my wheat bread experiments as I go! :) There's this cookbook from King Arthur flour that I really want to get, called "Whole Grain Baking"--I would really like to incorporate more whole wheat and other grains into our food, and I think a cookbook focused on that subject would give me a lot of help.
