I can't believe that our little boy is going to turn two on Sunday. Whew! Where did those 2 years go? We will be having his birthday party tomorrow, complete with Thomas decorations and a Thomas cake (assuming I can pull it off and have it come out looking the way I've drawn it on paper). :) We are just having family over to celebrate this year--I'm not into doing big parties every year--and I'm sure he will have a wonderful time. It will be fun because he should "get it" a lot more this year than he did last. Last year he wasn't even into eating his cake. Now that's one thing that will definitely be different this year!!
I thought it would be fun to post a few of Sam's 2 year old milestones and some of the cute things he says and does.
* Slept in his bunk bed for the first time 2 nights ago (but didn't want to last night--we didn't push it, but are hopeful he'll go back in it tonight!)
* Can now put together a "real" puzzle (albeit a 12 piece frame tray puzzle) of Pinocchio without help. He calls Pinocchio "Iyo-Pico."
* Is developing a longer attention span--He will play with his trains and track for long periods of time, and also loves to be read to for long periods of time!
* Has started "reading" to himself--give him a book that he knows well and he will turn the pages and say some of the words on each page.
* Had his own "devotions" this week--he imitated the family devotions that we do with him at night. He was sitting on the couch looking at his children's Bible, then he put it down and did this little sing-songy thing (supposed to be "Jesus Loves Me", which is what we sing with him), and then closed his eyes tight and said "Pray!" It was so cute.
* Sleeps all the way through the night, usually 10+ hours, on a regular basis (took a long time to get him there, but thankfully we made it before baby #2!)
Well, I had planned to write more, but it's getting late and I need to have some cuddle time with hubby, who just arrived home from a long day of work a little while ago. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Happy Birthday Sam! I hope you have a fun party today; I'm sure Sam will love his cake this year! Even at Luke's 1st birthday, he loved cake. That was the first time he had it. He didn't play around with the frosting too much; he just went right to work and ate the whole piece and asked for more!
I can't believe Luke is closer to 2 years than 1. We're moving at the end of May - about 1 month before his 2nd birthday, and I've been thinking about switching over to a big-boy bed after the move. Was it hard for Sam to make that switch? (I know it sounds like he still isn't sleeping in the bunk every night.) Do you think we should wait until after the move has settled in, or wouldn't it matter? I suppose we'll have to see. Also, when are you going to think about potty training? I wasn't planning on even entertaining the idea until 2 years old. Sorry for all the questions, but since you're just ahead of us, I though I'd ask. :)
Katie, thanks for the birthday wishes for Sam. :) He had a fun time at his party; I'll definitely try to post a few pics later for all to see. The cake and ice cream was definitely a big hit!
I think if I was you, I would wait till after you move to switch Luke to a big boy bed. Sam has only slept in his one night out of the 4 that it's been in his room and we're not pushing it too hard (yet). Considering that he's been in the crib since he was a newborn, I know that is what's most familiar to him. However, the night that he did sleep in the bed, he slept like a log, so I don't think it'll take him too long to adjust. Anyway, it can be quite a change for a little guy, and as long as you don't need your crib for another little one in the near future, keeping him in a while longer would be fine. However, if Luke is a really good sleeper already (and since I know you have had him away from home a bit, visiting family and all), maybe the transition would be a piece of cake for him. I guess I would mainly be concerned that he have a familiar place to sleep in his new room when you move, whether it be crib or bed. Hmmm, I'm a lot of help, huh? :)
About potty training, I'm no expert . . . hee hee . . . but I need to be working on that. I had big plans to get him all trained by the time he hit 2--not going to happen, mainly because I got lazy and haven't worked very hard on it. He has a nice Baby Bjorn potty seat (pricey, but nice) and sometimes he likes to sit on it and go pee pee, and other times he has a fit if we try to get him on it. I've found that trickling a bit of warm water over his lower belly helps him go--but I also need him to learn to go on his own. We've tried to really praise and encourage him when he does go on the potty, and reward him with a bit of chocolate or something sometimes, but he still isn't motivated to run in the bathroom whenever he has to go. He is starting to get to the point of not liking to have a poopy diaper, so I'm hoping that he will soon realize it would be more comfortable for him to go on the potty. My hubby keeps saying, "You need to get him potty trained!" And I know he's right, but being pregnant has made me more lazy and forgetful about working on it. (Pregnancy is always such a good excuse, huh?! :))
Happy Birthday Sam!
Have a great day. :)
Happy Birthday Sam! Carrie- We got a new laptop, and I can't find your e-mail address. oddly enough, i remembered your blog page... hope all's well. please send me a quickie and I'll reply! God's peace. <><
¡Feliz cumpleanos Samuel!
Be sure to post some pictures of that difficult-sounding-train-cake. Our little Chloe is already almost 7 months old and I echo you - these little ones grow up fast! What a joy she brings to my life though. It's so cool to watch her learn and develop.
Your anecdote about Sam doing his "devotions" brought tears to my eyes. How precious and pure. Ahh, you make me ansy for the day when Chloe will be 2. Maybe I shouldn't wish for that though. She's still immobile and doesn't get into things. :)
Hope the party is a big hit!
Alicia
