Things I'm learning (or re-learning :))

Time for a little more thoughtful/serious post . . . about some things God has been teaching me lately! In April, I read The Mission of Motherhood in my devotional time and it was excellent. Coming into May, I wasn't sure what I was going to do next for my daily time with the Lord, but I came across a free ebook study of Proverbs 31 at Good Morning Girls, which is really just what I need right now. Along with doing the study, I got into an email group of accountability partners--a bunch of homeschool moms who are all going through the same Bible study together. It's been great to make some new friends and learn along with other ladies, and I'm really enjoying it! Plus, it is really helping me stay on track (at least Monday-Friday :)) since I know I will be emailing other ladies to check in.

As most of you probably know, the Proverbs 31 chapter is mostly about the famous "Proverbs 31 Woman." As far as we know, this passage isn't necessarily describing a specific real person, but instead giving an example of Godly virtues that a man should look for in a wife, and that a wife should seek after in her own life. Here are some things I've learned or have been reminded of over the past 3 weeks of studying Proverbs 31:
  • The excellent wife is a rare treasure and a great blessing to her husband.
  • She is trustworthy.
  • She does good to her husband all the days of her life. Not just some of the days! I loved this post at Passionate Homemaking that went along with this principle very well.
  • She works with willing hands. This has been especially convicting to me. Most of you know that I struggle with organization and keeping things neat in my home. I have realized that change has to first of all begin with ME, and also that my work is actually an act of worship to God. Wow! When I think about it this way, it is easier to work cheerfully and willingly. Here's another great post from Passionate Homemaking along the same lines.
  • She goes above and beyond in her service to her family and others. We also studied the story of Rebekah this past week, how she not only gave Abraham's servant a drink of water, but drew water for all of his camels too. She had a true servant's heart! This was convicting also because I am not always ready and willing to go the extra mile for others.
Anyway, I am really thankful God led me to this study for the summer. I hope to be able to look back over the summer and see areas where God has helped me change! If anyone is interested, you can check out how to get the free ebook here, and check out the Good Morning Girls site here.

What a wonderful passage to be doing a Bible study in. I love that 'she eateth not the bread of idleness'- that one hit me too. One thing that blessed me was how she helped her husband by using God-given talents and selling her wares to the merchants. I am thankful that God recorded the characteristics of this virtuous woman. Enjoy your study. I pray for you, Carrie.

Just last week I had printed off a Proverbs 31 study too :). I am hoping to start it as soon as I get into some kind of summer schedule (failing miserably at this :(). Thank you for sharing some of the things you have learned so far ... it is amazing how God uses just a word here or there from a friend to encourage us. I am off to make a cherry pie for my sweetie :). Have a great day!

Enjoy your study! I have done several on this passage and one thing that has stuck with me is that we can do everything we do -- even sometimes repetitive housework -- as a service to God. Remembering that can motivate us to do our work wholeheartedly and well.
