Wow, I can't believe it's been a week since I last blogged! Time got away from me this week. Thanks to everyone for your comments and contributions last week--I enjoyed reading them!
For this week, here is a link to neat site called Preschoolers and Peace. I haven't looked over the whole site, but it seems to have a lot of helpful info for moms who are homeschooling their older children, while at the same time having little ones running around.
I got my Sonlight catalog a couple days ago, and have been having fun looking through that. At this point, I don't think I will be starting with a formal curriculum for a couple more years, but it is nice to have some ideas of what we may try. I haven't been doing "school" with Sam every day, but if it was up to him, we would do it every day, pretty much ALL day! He is really enjoying doing the workbooks, and learning the letters and sounds.
I hadn't gotten a chance to respond to comments from the last post, so I wanted to quickly do that here.
Rachel--I too used to say that I would NEVER homeschool my kids. I was very closed-minded about it! Then I took a homeschooling class in college, which completely changed my perspective on it, and made me think that it might be a good option after all. That's not to say that I think homeschooling is the only right way to go, but at this point in our lives (and especially due to where we live) it looks like the best method for us.
Tracy--your post on homeschooling was great, and I enjoyed reading about what you are doing with Kara! I also have the book The Well-Trained Mind and I agree that it's excellent! Even though I'm not sure that we will do classical education, there is still tons of helpful info. in that book.
Tricia--I hope you will blog some of your homeschooling adventures when you start with Ian! I've heard good things about classical education.
Alicia--As I said in my comment to Rachel, I agree that homeschooling is not the only way to go for every family! I have been surprised to find how many people out there believe that. We would definitely consider Christian school for our kids if we had a good one close by . . . which we don't at this time. We have a lot of reasons why we won't send our kids to public school, so right now homeschooling looks like the best option. Both of us like the idea of having our kids in a good Christian school for high school, but that is way down the road. We'll have to see where God has our family at that time. Also, I'd love to hear why you don't like Saxon math--please share, if you get a chance! I've never used it, but have heard mostly good things about it, and would love to hear your input since you're a math person! :)
Mindee--I've heard that Math-U-See is great! I'll have to check into it. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Carrie! I just wanted to say that I took that homeschooling class at NBBC as well - as an elective. Mrs. E taught it then, and opened my eyes to the possibilities of homeschooling too! (Wait - did we take it together?) I hope to homeschool at least some of our kiddos at some point in the future. Of course schooling is in our minds one of those "cross that bridge" kind of issues that we pray about NOW! :-) I wonder how many NBBC grads' minds were enlightened by that class?

Jenny--I think I must have taken it before you did. Mrs. Joan Scott was the teacher when I took it. I think that was the only class I ever had her for, but I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. Interestingly, the Scotts later moved to NH and we go to the same church now! Anyway . . . I agree that it was really enlightening. Up to that point, pretty much the only homeschool options I knew about were ACE, A Beka, or BJ. I couldn't believe how much more was available (and the options have increased even more now!). I think it's exciting to have the option of tailoring a child's education to suit their particular needs!
What is it about Saxon's Math? I'm curious. I did it in highschool and thought it was OK. I was never very good at math, though.

If you ever want to look at the Math"U" see curriculum I have it (all the grade levels). The boys used Saxon one year and now want nothing to do with it. They love Math "U" see.
